If the alluring moniker used by Megan Remy conjures images of volleyball teams or cheerleading squads, forget it. Not that there’s any doubt that Remy — sorry, U.S. Girls — couldn’t rise and conquer either challenge.

Like fellow DIY ingenues Sally Strobelight and Inca Ore, U.S. Girls’ approach is deceptively ethereal and delightfully haunting; lithe, lysergic gamma rays of keyboard murk beamed over percussive bonk sort of resemble Diamanda Galas reinterpreting Suicide’s “Red Star”. And dig that cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Prove It All Night,” done in such an effortless, barbital lush you’d swear the air was filled with mescaline. Guess what?
Formed in 2006, Brown Recluse take influences from the psych pop of The Zombies and Margo Guryan, the tropicalia of Os Mutantes, and 60s producers like Curt Boettcher, Joe Meek and Phil Spector, and create something very modern. A pastoral, psychedelic vibe permeates the group’s new EP, The Soft Skin, bringing to mind the sunshine pop of Curt Boettcher’s The Millennium/Sagittarius projects, and such familiar touchstones as Brian Wilson, Belle & Sebastian, The Clientele and the Elephant 6 collective.

Join us for an in-studio set featuring UK band Sian Alice Group, currently on tour supporting their new release, Troubled, Shaken Etc. (The Social Registry Records). Pitchfork writes, “Sian Alice Group chart transformations from psychedelic rock, pastoral folk, and piano-lounge balladry into analog-synthtronica, free-jazz breakdowns, pounding Afro-tech grooves, and avant-classical composition. The beauty of Sian Alice Group is that the band is capable of creating highly effective music even when they stray far from traditional torch-song territory.”
